Former NBA Player, Chris Herren, speaks to Lake County Students
Mentor, OH: The Lake County Alcohol, Drug Addiction and Mental Health Services (ADAMHS) Board, in collaboration with Kids Win!, United Way of Lake County, and the Lake County Commissioners, has partnered to bring the Herren Talks and Chris Herren’s message to students throughout the county. Attending schools districts were Willoughby-Eastlake, Painesville City, Wickliffe, Kirtland, Perry, Fairport Harbor, Madison, and Andrews Osborne Academy.
Chris Herren, a former NBA player, battled addiction throughout his career, coming dangerously close to losing everything he held dear. Now, living in recovery for over 16 years, Chris shares his story with honesty and directness, offering students a unique perspective on addiction and recovery. Unlike many others, Chris’s approach is stark and authentic, allowing him to connect with audiences ranging from young students to professional athletes.
Chris’s visit to Lake County focused on speaking with seventh and eighth-grade students, emphasizing the importance of recognizing trusted voices within their circles—whether in their schools, families, or communities—who can support them during challenging times. Herren underscored “It has been a privilege to talk to nearly 3,000 students here, I think this is the age to get involved (7 & 8th grade) to talk about drug use. If they are not stopping use now, at least I plant the seed, ten years from now, that recovery is always possible, and it is a beautiful thing”.
During his talk, Chris shared personal experiences, reflecting on how, like many of the students he spoke with, he grew up in a home impacted by addiction. He once promised his mother he would never fall into those traps, but he acknowledges how easy it is to break such promises without strong support and perseverance.
Kim Fraser, Executive Director of the Lake ADAMHS Board, highlighted the importance of the event: “Chris has spoken to over two million people about his recovery journey. By bringing him to Lake County, we aim to reach students beyond the traditional classroom setting. His message helps initiate crucial conversations, empowering school staff to become trusted voices that can guide students away from the paths of addiction and self-harm.”
Patrick Ward, Superintendent of Willoughby-Eastlake Schools, added, “Our students can only focus on academics if they feel safe and know they are cared for. This initiative is another way to remind them that teachers, counselors, and coaches are there as resources. While we may not always know what’s happening at home, statistics tell us that addiction, mental illness, and drug use are real challenges. Our goal is to equip students with the knowledge and confidence to navigate these issues. Together, we are making a difference in the lives of Lake County residents.”
Lake County Commissioner Richard J. Regovich detailed “I was fortunate to be able to hear Chris Herren’s powerful and impactful talk that was shared with the county’s 7th and 8th graders this past week. Chris’s story and message really inspires these young students to think how alcohol and drugs can destroy your life. I would like to thank Kim Fraser and the ADAMHS Board, Judge Marisa Cornachio, Marlene Cornachio, Dione DeMitro, Judy Moran, and Marie Leach for their help in putting this together for the future of Lake County.”
Dione DeMitro, President and CEO of United Way of Lake County affirmed “We were thrilled to play a part in bringing Chris to Lake County. His story is a powerful example that substance abuse disorders do not discriminate and that even those who seemingly have it all can lose everything to the disease of alcoholism and drug addiction. We are confident that many students were positively impacted by his story.”
